stan

my friends christian and tanja are currently working in a day care center in "la carolingia", one of the poorest neighborhoods in guatemala-city. as you all know, the area has recently been devastated by hurricane stan. christian and tanja are therefore asking for donations which will allow them to help out with food and clothes (every single buck will be invested directly as no bureaucracy is involved in this case).

a few questions

things that make me go hmm:

  • why am i totally obsessed about keeping my computer clean but don't care about clothes piling up in my bedroom?
  • when exactly have i given up on becoming a rockstar?
  • what would have happened if we kissed?
  • will midlife crisis ever kick in bad enough that i'll have to run a marathon?
  • how frequently do you google your name?
  • what would have happened if lilith would not have refused to lie below?
  • will ferris ever have to work again? (ferris, aka urs buehler, is a teenage colleague of mine. his new band il divo recently knocked robbie williams off the album chart no 1)
  • will i ever own a car? a media center? a plasma screen?
  • should non-pregnant guardians censor the contents of swissmom forums to prevent pregnant women from publishing unwanted satire?
  • how much can you love and hate your sisters simultaneously?
  • why does Double.NaN == Double.NaN evaluate to false?
  • how strange would i find someone who acted like me?

science fiction, franz ferdinand, and east german middlemen

what changes once you are 30:

  • friends publish their work in "nature". interestingly, it's not my biology friends who do so, but my brother in law, who is a writer. ben's story "falling" can be found here. to be honest, "falling" is a bit too science fictiony for my taste, but I really, really recommend having a read of "the orange". it's my favorite of his short stories and it's now featured on jennifer's refrigerator
  • you get email from "epic records", telling you that tori bootlegs can now be ordered online and paid by credit card. gone are the times when I had to send deutschmarks to my east german middleman (a total nerd named frank who used to send me love letters together with my orders) to get one of those colorful, russian flexy discs (rectangular, 1-mm-thin vinyl which immediately destroys your record player. on a lucky day, you could actually tell who was playing on it)
  • your favorite bands are featured in your daily newspaper. ten years ago, max kueng's latest article on "franz ferdinand" would have made me stop listening to them. but in times where your former flatmates are BaZ correspondents of the german elections and your erstwhile workmates are "10 vor 10", "tagesschau", and "sport aktuell" presenters, it's just a matter of fact that music journalists are probably your age and have a similar taste. get real.

indian curry

according to migros' latest ad campaign you will have "mehr zeit zum leben" if you buy their fast food indian curry (probably more additives than spices). maybe it's just my pregnancy hormones speaking again, but: rather use your time to cook it yourself (takes about 15 minutes). actually, I never follow recipes myself and the only reason this one exists is because I wrote it down for lee and etienne's goodbye gift. it's totally robust with respect to modifications: as long as you add the proper spices, you might as well just chop up the bottom drawer of your fridge and it will taste great... 1 onion loads of fresh coriander (or cilantro, if you're american ;-)) chop finely and fry in butter 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoons ground turmeric (curcuma) add and keep on stirring until fragrant 3 fresh tomatoes chop and add as well 150g lentils add and simmer until soft (add water if needed) fresh ginger coconut milk tomato puree salt & pepper season to taste
