tram talk

two teenage girls: "circles, that's something with pi" — "and what's the formula for the volume of a rectangle again?" — "width times lenght times height, i think, but i'm not sure" — "and what's the result? percent?" — "no, something with square".

zappelfilipa

filipa will be six months old next week, so my maternity leave will soon be over. actually, i've been working from home since the beginning of june already, and much to my delight, programming is still a lot of fun. but getting things done is difficult (even with a todo list). here's why:

crawling 2/2

crawling 1/2

it's still the very first stages of crawling, and luckily she's not very fast yet, but her curiosity is a powerful motivator. she's the happiest lil bean on earth, as long as she's entertained, but that is just not what easily goes side by side with debugging the central event queue. so as much as i dread leaving her behind next tuesday, it might actually make my programming life a bit easier.

getting things done

i love todo lists and i use them for even the smallest tasks i have to get done. i have always been using old-fashioned paper books to keep track of my lists, but every now and then i think about migrating to an electronic variant. but which one? korganizer? tadalist? some google desktop plugin? most of them are quite neat in the beginning but then turn out to have some limitations with respect to platform or mobile-phone compatibility. after a recent visit to http://todotxt.com, i might give the good ol' plain text variant a try.

just a thought

i've decided that i don't have to justify sitting in front of the computer when the wheather outside is beautiful as long as i also sit in front of the computer when the wheather is bad.

pastores

quite a while ago i asked you to donate money to help out the people in pastores (guatemala), after hurricane stan had hit them really hard. thanks to our help, christian and tanja were able to invest 2000 euros in the reconstruction of the local medical care center. here you can find a short summary (in german or french) of how they have invested the money, and here are some pictures of the equipment they have bought.

fear of the word yellow

my mum usually works as a teacher, but is currently on training leave. as part of a project she has to do, she wanted to write about her aviophobia (fear of flying). so she recently boarded a plane for the very first time in her life — just to find out that flying doesn't scare her in the slightest. one problem less to worry about.

of course her inexistent phobia doesn't really make an interesting project, so she decided to write about fears in general. we had a quick chat about this topic lately and she asked me about my personal fears. I guess I am mostly scared of losing people I love, quite scared of heights, and moderately scared of spiders. apart from that, I couldn't really think of any other fears.

my mum gave me this (german) and this (english) impressive phobia list. here's an excerpt:

ataxophobia: fear of disorder
aulophobia: fear of flutes
chronophobia: fear of time
epistemophobia: fear of knowledge
allodoxaphobia: fear of opinions
euphobia: fear of hearing good news
barophobia: fear of gravity
prosophobia: fear of progress
apotemnophobia: fear of persons with amputations
xanthophobia: fear of the color yellow or the word yellow

I am totally stunned by how difficult life could be.

jack pc

one of the many annoyances when moving into a new flat is the hassle of setting up all electronic devices, and in particular, sorting out their cables. when I read about the upcoming launch of jack pc, aka the wall socket pc, I felt like I really want to own one of these.

(via zdnet)

it ticks at 1.2 ghz, can grab its 5 watts via ethernet, and runs IE6 (don't really know whether I like that, though). most conveniently, you wanna use it as a thin client to connect to your severs via terminal services or thelike.

after giving it a second thought, I realized that jack wouldn't really solve my problem. it's mainly the PC that is gone, and what remains are cables.
