parallel universe

when I had a dentist appointment last week, my dentist accidentially hit my lip with one of her scary instruments. it didn't hurt in the slightest, but she still kept apologizing over and over again. this ironically reminded me of giving birth, where I got an episiotomy without anesthetics (and no apologies whatsoever).

I love ben's shockingly accurate description of the birth of his daughter:

It was a wonderful adventure, the way having your legs bitten off by a shark and having to swim 500 miles to an unknown island carrying your amputated legs, and then having them sown back on, is a wonderful adventure. Which is to say... in retrospect. It was Esther, of course, who had to swim carrying her legs; I was in the motorboat next to her shouting encouragement through a megaphone. And then, after reaching the shore and re-attaching her legs, we found that we had landed in a wonderful new country, a country we had always dreamed about, and that waiting there for us was an alien stranger who was the most perfect person in the world, and who we loved with a huge love that held up the sky.

we know the alien stranger quite well by now, but still feel like having entered a parallel universe.

reddit

in case you haven't already heard about reddit via joel's aardvark'd movie: reddit is

a source for what's new and popular on the web

it's basically just a collection of links, submittable by anyone. you can login to your personal account and train your filter by ranking submissions up or down. when your items are promoted, you get editorial karma, when they're sent to oblivion, well, so is your voting power. reddit is also available as a not safe for work variant.

etsy

etsy is ebay's little sister: an online marketplace for buying and selling all things handmade. while I'm not particularly interested in the gazillion of ipod covers, I love the idea of shopping by color or material.

another cool etsy category, called alchemy, lets you bargain over custom items. willing to trade in help on listings tagged mycomputerhatesme for a pair of hand knitted black socks?

evil nelly

cailler milch, my favorite swiss chocolate, has gotten a complete redesign. while the visual rehash (by architect jean nouvel) is totally cool, it's just not fair to change the taste of something as important as milk chocolate. don't get me wrong, I'm not a traditionalist. I can live with the fact that I'll never again be able to tear open the old lilac wrapping, but the thought that the old taste will never again tickle my neurons is freaking me out.

grenzgaenger

besides sala, another good friend and former flatmate of mine also sells art:

niggi's editions have static prices and are a bit more expensive than sala's work, but they also come closer to the common definition of art. though personally, I don't consider this important, I just buy what I like (visually or conceptually).

I've just bought the neighbor of the beast: 667
